As part of the public-facing side of TFC, I have been working on integrating a Reddit-style web forum (Postmill) with a web archiving tool (ArchiveBox).
forum.threefoldcord.site is a link aggregator for forums and discussion threads. It is a place to archive and discuss internet content that may be censored, deleted, or changed.
Here's how it works:
Anyone can create an account. This is separate from a TFC account. Once you create an account, you can post in forums. Consider checking out the wiki and the Welcome forum first!
When a whitelisted user posts a link to a website, the archive server will automatically make a backup (think like the Wayback Machine) within one hour. The forum post will then be automatically modified to link to the archive. I wrote some custom scripts to make this interaction happen and link the two servers.
The archive server (archive.threefoldcord.site) uses an ArchiveBox webserver to grab a sort of "snapshot" of the website. It makes several snapshots, including: a PDF, a screenshot, a SingleFile HTML file, a simplified easy to read view, and a Chromium HTML file. It also grabs media such as embedded videos.
New users aren't whitelisted by default, so reach out on the Welcome Forum if you want to be able to archive links.
I'm excited by this tool. Much of the web is transient. Prone to censorship, alteration, or obfuscation. This is a place to put things you feel are important to record for the future.
